Pilot Survey

Hey guys

Here's the link to my first ever pilot survey entitled People's experiences of Public Speaking/Life Coaches. So much easier than i thought it was going to be. Survey Monkey is such an amazing tool.
It's objective is to help me investigate people's experiences and views of public speakers/life coaches.

Phil's Pilot Survey for BAPP

It should take no more than 4-5mins and i would really appreciate any feedback.
Thank you in advance for your help and time.

Task 5B

Below are two codes of Practice/Ethics. One for a life coach, chosen as it clearly demonstrates the more personal approach adopted by most professional in this field, and one public speaking which conversely illustrates the slightly more regulated/corporate view.

Ethics in Life Coaching

Your life coach will:
•  Always conduct herself to the highest levels of ethics, integrity, accountability and responsibility.
•  Treat all clients and potential clients with absolute dignity, confidentiality and respect as free and equal individuals.
•  Uphold and maintain the good representation of the profession of life coaching.
•  Comply with both the spirit and the letter of any agreements made with her clients, potential clients and other professional colleagues.
•  Make any commercial agreements with clients and potential clients that are fair and respect all parties to such agreements.
•  Clearly state to clients and potential clients, the terms of any commercial agreement.
•  Represent true levels of status, title, competence and experience in order not to mislead, misrepresent or defraud.
•  Make no un-realistic claims or implications of the services provided.
•  Obtain written permission from any client or potential client before releasing their names as referees.
•  Respect the absolute rights of clients' confidentiality except as expressly permitted by the client or potential client in writing or as required by law.
•  Recommend different coaching, professional advice or resources when these will be more appropriate to the client's needs.
•  Not offer professional information or advice that is known to be confidential, misleading or where accuracy is beyond her competence to assess.
•  Not knowingly coach anyone below the age of 18 years without the express written consent of parent, guardian or teacher as appropriate.
•  Comply with all laws and bye-laws of the UK and the country of residence where the client is based if that is not within the UK.
•  Ensure that all advertisements and promotional materials, whether verbal or written, are legal, decent, honest, truthful and in compliance with the UK Advertising Standards Authority.
Make a copy of this Code freely available to all clients and potential clients, and if requested to any other interested parties.

Ethics for Public Speakers:

The purpose of this Code of Professional Ethics is to establish and maintain our brand, reputation and public confidence in the professionalism, dedication, and integrity of not only the individual member of NSA, but also of the Association itself.
The characteristics of honesty, leadership and stewardship are integral to the success of both NSA and the individual professional speaker.
Therefore, all members of NSA subscribe to this Code of Professional Ethics as a condition of membership, with the firm belief that each member will strive to uphold the values, reputation and legacy of NSA. By doing so, members recognize the necessity to preserve and encourage fair and equitable practices among all who are engaged in professional speaking.
Violations of this Code are determined in accordance with the bylaws, policies and procedures of NSA. Any disciplinary action instituted by NSA shall be binding and final upon the NSA member and without recourse to the Association, its officers, members or staff.
Article 1 – Representation
The NSA member has an obligation to oneself and to NSA to represent oneself truthfully, professionally and in a non-misleading manner. The NSA member shall be honest and accurate in presenting qualifications and experience in the member’s communication with others.
Article 2 – Professionalism
The NSA member shall act, operate his/her business, and speak in a most professional and ethical manner so as neither to offend nor bring discredit to oneself, the speaking profession or one’s fellow NSA members.
Article 3 – Research
The NSA member shall exert efforts to understand each client’s organization, approaches, goals and culture in advance of a presentation, in order to professionally apply one’s expertise to meet each client’s needs.
Article 4 – Intellectual Property
The NSA member shall avoid using – either orally or in writing – materials, titles or thematic creations originated by others unless approved in writing by the originator.
Article 5 – Respect & Collegiality
The NSA member shall maintain a collegial relationship with fellow members that is based on respect, professional courtesy, dignity and the highest ethical standards.
Article 6 – Confidentiality
The NSA member shall maintain and respect the confidentiality of business or personal affairs of clients, agents and other speakers.
Article 7 – Business Practices
The NSA member is obligated to maintain a high level of ethical standards and practices in order to assist in protecting the public against fraud or any unfair practice in the speaking profession and shall attempt to eliminate from the profession all practices that could bring discredit to the speaking profession.
Article 8 – Diversity
The NSA member shall not participate in any agreement or activity that would limit or deny access to the marketplace to any other speaker, to a client, or to the public. This includes, but not limited to, economic factors, race, ethnicity, creed, color, sex, age, sexual orientation, disability, religion, or country of national origin of any party.

The two terms, Code of Practice and Code of Ethics, seem to be used quite interchangeably by most. I’m assuming because to most of the general public, as I too demonstrated in my statement at the end of Task 5A, “at the moment, they mean the same”.
However, on further investigation, I began to uncover distinct differences.
As far as I can gather, most people are of the opinion that a code of Practice/Regulations/Conduct relates to your actions/behaviour where as the code of Ethics embodies more the concepts of right and wrong, your beliefs.
They are very strongly linked as your Practices are generally lead by your Ethics. Most people understand that sexual harassment, bulling is not acceptable behavior whether set out in the Codes of Practice of not. However if a company decides that employees should not make personal calls at work and they do, the act of making a phone call, which is not normally considered an immoral act, becomes one, as it conflicts the set out terms of practice.
The Codes of Practice seem also to be something that sets out clearly and plainly the moral expectations of the individual. Your own personal Codes of Ethics could be something that you default back to in situations unclearly governed by the terms stipulated in the codes of practice. This could also work just as easily in reverse. Leading me to believe that they are both a guide and back up for individuals in times of decision.
These findings are not a million miles away, although infinitely more comprehensive, from my initial thoughts in Task 5A. The main differences as far as I can see are the definite difference between Practice and Ethics. Before they seemed the same to me and, as I’ve discussed above, although they are very strongly linked, they are too, very different.
My initial ideas on the fields not being too heavily weighed down by restrictive legislation still hold true but I can see that a clearly defined list of do’s and don’ts (all be mostly common sense for most people) can be used as a back up to aid and support in times of need.

Task 5A

Ethics in Public Speaking/Life Coaching

There are, as far as I am aware, very few formal codes of practice/regulations within the field of Life coaching/Public speaking. The rules that are most commonly adhered to are those merely of common decency and attempting to be moral, treating people fairly.
This I think is both one of the advantages and disadvantages of the profession. Unlike Primary school teaching where every thing’s regulated, monitored, tested and formally recorded, the current unregulated nature of speaking does not stifle the practitioner, interfering with them being able to carry out their job whilst drowning them in red tape and admin/paperwork.
On the flip side, however, this can somewhat undermine the credibility of the profession, as anyone can currently call themselves a life coach.
I believe that Ethics are something that come naturally to most. It is an inbuilt understanding, whether conscious or not, of what is right and fair and what is not.

Code of Ethics / Codes of practice/regulation
Confidentiality
Doing what you say you are going to do
Never plagiarise / copy anyone else’s material
Not taking advantage of a position of power/trust
Never knowingly mislead anyone
Offer value for money
Try to do the best you can by people
If people are not happy, give them their money back, no questions asked

I have put all of these under the same headings as to me, at the moment, they mean the same.

These are my current thoughts on ethics in my chosen community.

Break throughs!!

Hi everyone
After much researching and head, against a wall, banging i have begun to make some good progress.
I have had a number of very helpful telephone, email, Blog and even face to face conversations around the whole topic of BAPP and my lines of enquiry. Here are my findings thus far.
Lisa Whyte's proposed Award Title has really inspired me and so now I'm considering 'Performing and either Production or Presenting', as either of these are relevant and supported by my previous and current studies/experience and also will support me in my ongoing career aspirations...WOOHOO finally some progress.
Also finding Lisa as a fellow BAPP'er who's interests are relatively aligned with mine is brilliant as i was beginning to think that i was going to have to continue my networking and investigations almost wholly outside of the BAPP Network, making it really inconvenient for Blogging to be used as supportive evidence/examples for future work. Corinda and Hannah have also offered some assistance and great advice.
If ANYONE would like some support or feedback on their topic then this is a genuine and sincere offer, what ever i CAN offer. Just comment here and i'll do everything i can to help, whether similar topic or not.
Its so important to receive help and allow others to support you - Thank you to those who have been helping me get my self back on track, i am eternally grateful.
I have lined up a number of professionals i know or have had contact with to test out some questionnaire's on, i decided it was better to use (as i have the contacts to do so) people in the industry rather than my fellow students or family etc. I know these people well enough to use them as guinea pigs and for them to be happy to take part and help out. So over the next couple of days i will finish off my questions and next week begin my interviews - recording and then dictating them.
I am still open to a little fine tuning of my final enquiry but currently it sits as interviewing a number (3 probably) industry professionals. Where i am still a little unsure is whether i want to pay homage to 3 very experienced/retired/resected coaches/speakers or do an observational piece on 3 different approaches to the same industry/job/role. I'm hoping that through carrying out these first tester interviews i'll have some break throughs and clarity on which excites me most and which would be most beneficial to me.
There it is folks so far.
Let me know if i can help you at all, in anything, or if you have any thoughts that may be helpful - books, links, conversations you've come across that i could look at.
I hope you are all doing really well in your own works of art.

WANTED!! Help & SIG

WANTED!!
Help & SIG (to take pity on me and take me in)

I know that my line of enquiry, detailed below, sits a little outside the majority of our groups current lines of enquiry (there are however always cross over areas of interest) but I could really do with some advice, Help, guidance as I am about 5 weeks behind, not even looked at Ethics and struggling to find a handhold to get going again.
I have not yet been able to look through every ones topics or find all the SIG groups out there so if you think that we could help each other in any way then please either just leave a comment or private message me at flipcarroll@hotmail.com or txt me and ill call you back for a chat about it all (07967 729 903).
Any help will be hugely welcomed with open arms.

Thank you in advance.

Current lines of enquiry

Hey All

I have, as a result of other things going on, lost a bit of ground on the course. I am now able to start work on the course again and here are my thoughts upon recommencement.
I realised that i was doing what i could towards catching up on the course work but not Blogging about it so no one knew where i was up to, so here are my thoughts.

I am feeling a bit more lost than I thought I would on this section of the course.
I felt that I had quite a clear idea of what my areas of interest were. However as I have begun looking further into module 2 I have begun questioning if I am actually on the right track or not. Over the last two – three weeks I have read through numerous Blogs from both our year and previous years looking for inspiration on past topics, course titles as well as students with whom I could share a SIG.
I Briefly spoke with Alan Durrant and was told that my title needed to be closer related to performing Arts than I had in mind.
My first few thoughts for my award title (to help me in the Public speaking world) was: Human Behaviour or Behavioural Development, something along those lines. I do not feel that a title including the words Performing or Arts would benefit me in my chosen field.
Possibly Education would, but what else…Management, Development.
How about Educational Development?
Surely Public Speaking is only a small extension of performing as is Presenting.
I know quite clearly what I want to get out of this course, or thought I did, but am questioning now if it’s too far removed from performing to tie the two together.

At the end of all of this I feel further back and more confused than I did before. This, I keep trying to tell myself, is a good thing as confusion/frustration is a sign of a forthcoming breakthrough. However this process has begun me questioning whether I want to lecture in the subject/field I was considering before (procrastination). Although its very applicable to many people, does it really interest me?

I am also wrestling a little with finding others with whom I could share a SIG group. Both so I can help them and vise Versa. Is my chosen field too far removed? I’ve been looking around for Presenters, Managers, Business/School starters. There are a number of people on the course with whom I feel  I have made a connection but does it matter that much if our paths are not too similar?

After a second much more productive and focused conversation with Alan I felt much more clear on my route through the course.

I’m going to plot out the topography of the lecturing, coaching, teaching, consulting, education landscape in an effort to discover exactly where and why I want to make my niche.

BUILD UP A TOPOGRAPHY OF THE FIELD OF EDUCTAION/HELPING PEOPLE!!

Now my current lines of enquiry are:
WHAT IS COACHING?
WHAT DIFFERENT KINDS OF COCHING ARE THERE?
IS COACHING LIKE TEACHING/ LECTURING / CONSULTING WHATS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THEM?
WHAT TYPE OF PERSON IS TYPICALLY DRAWN TO EACH OF THESE DIFFERENT ROLES?
WHAT QUALIFICATIONS / TRAINING IS THERE OUT THERE FOR COACHES?
WHO USES COACHES & WHERE/HOW DO YOU FIND THEM?
WHAT DO COACHES GET OUT OF IT?
WHAT ARE THE CONDITIONS - ENVIRONMENT, HOURS, PAY, ENJOYMENT, DIFFICULTY OF GETTING CLENTS, WORK/LIFE BALANCE?
HOW DO THEY START - GET MATERIAL TOGETHER, GET CLIENTS, GET CONFIDENCE TO TEACH OTHERS?
WHAT DO I CURRENTLY KNOW ABOUT IT? WHAT ARE MY FEELINGS ABOUT IT?
WHO CAN I SPEAK TO REGARDING IT?
WHAT DIFFERENTIATES BETWEEN ONE COACH AND ANOTHER, WHY DO PEOPLE CHOOSE A PARTICULAR ONE OVER ANOTHER ONE?
WHY DO PEOPLE/WHO CHOOSES COACHES?

So this is where I'm up to at the moment. I have spent the last 4 days googling Coaches and recording my thoughts on my findings. I need a more structured approach so i think i will make a plan on a calendar so i know what i want to have done by when.
I will try to contact a few coaches and see about interviewing them about their thoughts and experiences to see what else this sparks off in my investigations.

Any thoughts from you would be terrific and are greatly needed!!

Getting back into the flow - Reader 4

After reviewing Reader 4 for the eighth time:

My thought process so far:
My work is definitely transdisciplinary. Lecturing/Teaching, Business and Management, Writing Material, Marketing as well as Performing/Speaking,

My competence is low in my chosen field but I believe that my capability is high.

What are my competencies?
I’m good with people, Natural leader, love giving/ helping/educating, contacts in the field of public speaking, los of life experience, achieved a lot within my own life, empathetic and approachable,

What are my capabilities?
I love learning, im passionate about helping people, I have a great way of explaining/presenting information to people.
No material written down ready to teach, no group of people to talk to, no specific chosen subject yet, no credibility, no experience of speaking/teaching groups

Questions I’m asking myself in search of clarity:
WHAT AM I PASSIONATE ABOUT?
What are my concerns?
Something you are interested in/passionate about
something applicable to my field
something around you all the time so you are thinking about it constantly
Do I understand the topic enough to explore it?
What do you need to find out?
Why will that make a difference to my work and career?
What impact will it have on my job, work colleagues, the sector in which i work?
Can you spread/pass on what i find out anywhere?
Will your project have some sort of impact?
Are you going to develop some new service? a new product? a learning resource?
Is my chosen field too far removed from performing?
What skills do I need for the future?
Are most of my questions thus far pseudo questions or genuine ones?
What’s a job that needs to be done or what im doing anyway

Past titles other students have used that have an area of similarity/interrest for me:
Behaviour Management within a primary school context, primarily focusing on year three children in Key Stage two
An investigation into the Role of Experiential Learning, and its Contribution to the Progression of a Ballet Company
Preparing an Optimised Dance Curriculum for a Mixed Ability Performing Arts Course’,
‘The Transition from Dancer to choreographer within the Field of Musical Theatre
How can you/what do you need to affectively make the transition from one field of performing to another?
The price people pay for their choices. Dancers – fun, no stress but no roots, ability to get a mortgage etc

Possible subjects I’m considering:
Journey from dancer to speaker - LIFE BALANCE – learned throughout my time performing
What do I want to do next and how do I get there (finding my own voice)
How do you get the life/work balance right
How do you fill the void of performing when you change careers
Developing my curriculum for educating my clients
What’s the best way for me to help people/educate
With so many opportunities, how do you choose
